Color Diffusion

This simple science activity shows children how the diffusion of color in water works. The food coloring dissolves in water and diffuses from high to low concentration and is impeded by sugar, thus changing the direction of movement. Let’s get started.

What you’ll need

  •  M&M’s Chocolate
  • Warm Water
  • Sugar
  • Tray

How to Set Up

  1. Prepare a pitcher of warm water.

How to play

  1. Place the M&M chocolates on the tray, arrange the colors as desired.
  2. Pour warm water into the tray. Observe how the food coloring dissolves in water and diffuses from high to low concentration.
  3. Place the salt in the desired position to interrupt the movement.
