Garden Counting

A counting exercise to help improve children’s readiness for addition

In this activity children find the animals in the garden and count them. Counting exercises help improve children’s readiness for addition and subtraction. Using fingers to open threads encourages children to use their finger muscles as well. Let’s do it.

What you’ll need

  • Chanafavors Printables
  • Scissors / Glue
  • Clear Sticker Sheet
  • Cardboard
  • Yarn
  • Whiteboard Markers

How to Set Up

  1. Print the Chanafavors printable file.
  2. Coat the worksheet with a clear sticker sheet and attach it to the cardboard.
  3. Use scissors to cut from the top and bottom edge to the image border. Weave the yarn over the edge of the worksheet top to bottom, alternating left and right to make grass cover the garden image.

How to play

  1. Place the worksheet in front of your children. Ask them to see the animal list on the right.
  2. Ask the children to use fingers to open the grass to see find the animals. Count and write the number of each animal.
  3. Repeat the steps with the rest of the animals.
