Toothpick Star Experiment

Toothpicks in action! Toothpicks are made of wood, and inside the wood there are many small tubes called fibers. When wet and absorb water, the bent wood fibers expand and try to stretch back to their original positions. Let’s show your kids how this capillary action works.

What you’ll need

  • Toothpicks
  • Liquid Dropper
  • Food Coloring
  • Tray
  • Tray

How to Set Up

  1. Bend the toothpicks in half and arrange them on the tray to form a star or as shown in the video.
  2. Mix food coloring into the water.

Tips

*The shaving cream is easily washed off with water.
