Exploding Baggies Experiment

Today I would like to present a more fun version of the smiley faces. The smiley face bags can pop from carbon dioxide just like the gas in soda water. Hope the kids enjoy it and have a smiley day.

What you’ll need

  • Freezer Bag
  • Chanafavors Free Printables
  • Baking Soda
  • Food Coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Permanent Marker

How to Set Up

  1. Print the template from the Chanafavors Free Printable file. Put a freezer bag on top of the template and draw a smiley face with a permanent marker.
  2. Put some baking soda in each bag. Set aside.
  3. Mix food coloring with vinegar in a small cup. Then put the cup into the baking soda bag. Close the bag and be careful not to mix them all together yet.

Tips

*In this experiment, freezer bags are better than zip bags because they lock tighter. The pressure lasts longer and the bag inflates longer.

*After inflating, the pressure gas will push the bag open. If you want to delay it, add less vinegar than baking soda so children can shake the bag for fun before it popped.

Safety
Adult supervision is required for any activity presented by CHANA and Chanafavors.
