Black Marker Experiment

Is Black Ink Really Black? Amaze your children with the science of black ink and Chromatography. It is a method used to separate the mixtures. In this case, lemon juice carries the yellow and blue pigments out of the black ink as shown on the toilet paper.

What you’ll need

  • Non-permanent Marker (Black)
  • Lemon Juice
  • Toilet Paper
  • Cotton Balls

How to Set Up

  1. Put some lemon juice on a cotton ball. Set aside.
  2. Lay some toilet papers on a paper plate or else to protect your table.
  3. Paint a large black dot on the paper with a black marker.

Tips

Most black inks include a combination of different colors of dyes. Try different black markers to get different effects.
